Going on vacation means kicking back, relaxing, and making the most of your time away from home. Of course, that will include sampling the local adult beverages. As when drinking at home, there are some tips to follow to keep yourself safe and well while you’re enjoying yourself while traveling.
Never drink and drive
As when at home, never, ever, drink and drive. Even if the country you’re visiting appears more lax on the rules, it’s not worth taking the risk. Remember, even a small amount of alcohol can impair your judgement. Look into whether the country you’re visiting is serviced by taxi apps such as Uber or Lyft, as they can easily get you back home after a night out on the town.
Hangovers are bad when you’re at home, and they’re even worse when you don’t have access to your own bed. When drinking, the best way to avoid this situation is to stay hydrated. Try to match each alcoholic drink you have with one water or other soft drink. That way, you’re lessening the amount of alcohol you’re taking in, plus you’re keeping topped up with fluids.
Watch your intake on planes
It’s tempting to take advantage on the on board bar. After all, you’re on vacation now, why not get an early start? There’s no reason not to, but remember that alcohol will affect you more while you’re in the air, thanks to the atmospheric pressure in the cabin. Keep the minis to a minimum and keep a clear head for when you land.
Be aware of local differences
You’re aware of the rules around drinking while you’re at home, but be aware that they may well be different in the country you’re traveling to. For example, the minimum drinking ages may be different, and there may be different laws around outdoors drinking. Also, there may be different cultural attitudes to drinking that you may not have even thought of until now. Research what the laws are before you go, and you’ll avoid any potentially sticky situations.
Stay safe when drinking
Just as you would at home, keep yourself safe while you’re enjoying the local drinks. Never drink alone, as alone you’re more of a target for any unsavory types that may be lurking around. Also, don’t take any valuables with you, as you don’t want to lose them. Taking some form of payment is fine, but don’t take your entire wallet. Finally, memorise the address of the place where you’re staying while you’re in the country. If that’s too difficult, writing it down or taking the hotel’s business card is great when you order a taxi, as you can just hand it to the driver.
Follow these simple tips and you’ll be safe and healthy throughout your travels, no matter what you sample on the way. Take the time to try the local drinks, and you may find your new favorite tipple.[Image Credit]
